Have a talent in art or writing? Want to gain a talent in art? Here are two opportunities to showcase or develop your skills. All information is directly from the organizations promoting the program.

2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

The registration and submission window for the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards opens September 12th, 2018. Please mark your calendar with the following important dates:

• September 12th, 2018: Submission/registration window open

• December 13th, 2018: Submission/registration window closes at 11:59 pm

• February 1st, 2019: Notification of Regional winners via teacher email

• February 15th, 2019: Art exhibition pieces due to Scarfone/Hartley Gallery at University of Tampa

• February 28th, 2019: Opening Reception/ Awards Ceremony (UT’s Scarfone/Hartley Gallery & Falk Theatre)

• Feb 28th – March 8th, 2019: Scholastic Art & Writing exhibition • March 12th, 2019: All exhibition pieces picked up at Scarfone/Hartley Gallery

• Week of March 10th, 2019: Notification of National Winners (via teacher email and Scholastic Online account)

• June 6th, 2019: National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall, NYC (National gold medalists) Important information (please use Google Chrome): Website: (take a look at archived student works to see expectations) FAQ link: Educators are required to create new accounts. Students who have participated in the past can login with their email address and password and will be prompted to update their school and password. Registration link: Entry Categories Be sure students are aware of the different categories so they can select the correct one for their work:

• Art:

o New: The ESA Foundation Award for Video Game Design o New: One Earth Award

• Writing:

o New: One Earth Award Marketing Materials Posters and postcards are enclosed. Contact me if you need additional copies to post in specific classrooms or heavily populated areas of your school where more student eyes may get to see. You have also been provided an archived Regional program to share with student and for your own resource. Submission forms- As in previous submission years, once students have uploaded their information into the Scholastic Art & Writing online registration system, forms will need to be printed, signed and sent to the appropriate contact included in this letter. Submission Fees: $5 each individual work, $20 senior portfolios. Credit Card payment link (use Google Chrome)- Checks/cash: made payable to HCPS (if sending checks to the affiliate address below or through school mail, PLEASE ATTACH A COPY OF THE SUBMISSION FORM TO PAYMENT. Fee Waiver: If for any reason, submission fees for a student pose a financial hardship, click the Fee Waiver Form box, print the form, and send this to the appropriate contact below with their signed Submission Form on or before Friday, December 15th, 2018.

Spray Painting and Mural Planning Class 

This class is in partnership with the Tampa Museum of Art .   Class members will gain practice working with spray paint.  Learning different spray painting techniques and how to plan and execute a large-scale mural.  Class is for Adults and ages 16 & up.
It is seven – 3hour classes on Saturdays 9:30 – 12:30pm from October 6 thru Nov. 17th.
Tuition is  $175 and for Firehouse Cultural Members $150. Since this is in partnership with The Tampa Museum of Art, we can offer some scholarships for students.   If you have students that would be interested and need a scholarship, we would encourage them to apply for this scholarship class. If the student calls, please have them identify themselves as coming thru your department. You can reach The Firehouse Cultural Center at 813-645-7651.  Either Georgia or Frances can take the information for scholarship classes.
Teen Open Studio Teen Open Studio – grades 6 -12  on Saturdays – Sept. 29, Oct. 27, Dec. 1st ,of 2018 and Jan. 26, Feb. 23, April 27 and May 18 in 2019.
These classes are FREE and run from 9:30am – 12:00pm.   We have a maximum of  10 spaces available per studio.
Students may register online:  [ http:// ] or call 813-645-7651.   Reservations are Required. The Teen Open Studio is brought to the  Cultural Center through its partnership with The Tampa Museum of Art. This is an opportunity to work alongside professional working artists
