The college essay can be considered the most important part of your college application because it gives the college a glimpse of you behind the grades and/or athletics. If you are having trouble writing, here are some tips to help you:

  • Be yourself.
  • Make it fun.
  • Tell them something different.
  • Take time to go beyond the obvious.
  • Don’t try to take on too much.
  • Concentrate on topics of true significance to you.
  • Write thoughtfully and from your heart.
  • Essays should have a thesis clear to you and the reader.
  • PROOFREAD! The last thing you want your dream college to think is that you have bad grammar!
  • Keep it short and to the point.
  • Limit the number of people you talk about in the essay.
  • Appearance counts: Format your essay in an easy-to-read manner. Have multiple paragraphs. Each paragraph should make a point.
  • SHOW, don’t tell. Try to recreate the scene for your readers.
  • Have someone else read over your essay. They can let you know if it is an accurate representation of you.
  • While you want to highlight your features, don’t overexaggerate. You want to make the essay show you are in reality.
